We agree! The new Plaza will include a series of three connected open spaces featuring substantial new green space. We will also eliminate the inconsistent grade changes and physical barriers around the Plaza.

We love the idea of pop-up vendors! This past summer we worked with a local restaurant - Middle East Cuisine - to organize a pop-up lunch event on the Plaza. We set up tables and chairs so people could stop by to enjoy delicious falafel, spanakopita and baklava at no charge. Our Pita on the Plaza event is just one example of how we plan to incorporate small local retail/pop-ups at the Plaza.

Improving the bus bay is on the top of our list. We want residents and commuters to arrive and stay. The improved bus bay area will feature better lighting, public art, way-finding and small retail. It will also take full advantage of this prominent location atop the Bethesda Metro Center which will significantly contribute to the mixed-use, transit-oriented district and will further expand non-auto transit use in the region. We are also looking forward to providing users with a variety of natural elements to enjoy - including open lawns, plantings and cooling tree canopies.

Ice cream is a great idea, especially during the summer! In fact, we arranged a pop-up for Rockville-based Carmen's Italian Ice to provide ice cream and Italian ices to folks in the Plaza last year. We look forward to activating the open spaces with small shops, cafes and pop-up vendors which will give visitors, residents and office workers a variety of retail and food options.

We love Bryant Park! It works so well a "flexible park" for a variety of activities. That's a template we have been discussing for some time - particularly for the Central Lawn area - an area where the public can sit and relax and also enjoy ongoing activities. Thanks for these thoughts!
Brookfield commented on Bethesda Metro Center 7 months ago
Hi Jessica - We look forward to providing the community with these kinds of features that will encourage people to sit and enjoy the newly renovated public spaces, particularly the Central Lawn. We agree that this should be a safe area for everyone to enjoy - proper lighting features will help to ensure that's the case.
Brookfield commented on Bethesda Metro Center 7 months ago

We look forward to providing plenty of events for the community on our Central Lawn that are geared towards fitness - such as Zumba marathons and yoga sessions. Our Gallery area should provide for a quiet shaded respite for people to enjoy.

Thanks Brooke. That's a sentiment that several others have made and we will certainly look into this avenue.

Thanks Maria. Rotating art installations is one of the main areas of focus for Arts Brookfield. I encourage you to visit the Arts Brookfield site to see what we have done on this front in other public spaces in our portfolio: http://artsbrookfield.com

Hi Faith! Thanks for your input. We look forward to bringing the community together through a variety of artistic experiences. Dance events on the new plaza would be a great opportunity to create activity and remind Bethesda that this space is theirs to share and enjoy.

We agree!

Hi Amanda - The Central Lawn will be the centerpiece of the rejuvenation of the Plaza. It will be visibly prominent from both Wisconsin Ave. and Old Georgetown Rd. All of the planned open space leads to the Central Lawn. This, in conjunction with active programming and new retail will make this area even more inviting. We think this will be great improvement when compared to the underutilized plaza that is in place today. We appreciate the challenges of making this a success and we look forward to bringing our Arts Brookfield programming to the Bethesda Metro Center to execute on this.

Hi Amanda - We fully agree and we look forward to making these kinds of badly needed improvements to this area - which serves as an important first impression for visitors to Bethesda.

Hi Amanda - Great ideas. We look forward to using the newly designed plaza as a canvas to highlight local artists and the history of Bethesda.

Hi Amanda - Thanks for your comments. We are still making a decision as to whether the building will be an office building or a residential building. In either event, our architects are focused on how this building will relate to the surrounding buildings and the open space. We are paying particular attention to the design guidelines (which are a component of the Downtown Bethesda Sector Plan) to ensure that the design of this building (in either scenario) meets or exceeds the requirements of the Sector Plan and relates well to its surrounding environment. Also, please take a closer look at our plans and you will see that the Central Lawn is the centerpiece of the rejuvenation of the Plaza.

Thanks Ken. We agree that the existing approach from the Metro into the bus bay is a pretty depressing experience. Better lighting, colors, artwork and other similar improvements will go a long way to address this issue. On the plaza level, we anticipate providing for interesting retail options for Bethesda residents and workers to encourage them to take full advantage of the redesigned Bethesda Metro Center plaza.

We like that idea, Ken. Improving the existing open space at Bethesda Metro Center will provide us with a launch pad to get creative with art through our Arts Brookfield program. We look forward to sharing a variety of art experiences (free of charge) with the Bethesda community.

Thanks Rick. We are excited about the project as well and agree that this is a very important focal point for Bethesda. Part of our goal for the project is to turn the existing open space into a much more functional and usable area that will be designed to cater to a variety of events for the community to enjoy.

Hi Lola - We look forward to providing this kind of event programming (for free) through ArtsBrookfield.
Brookfield commented on Bethesda Metro Center 7 months, 4 weeks ago
We like your ideas, Lola. We believe the various outdoor spaces to be incorporated within Brookfield's design for the plaza will provide good opportunities for various outdoor activities, including outdoor markets.
Brookfield commented on Bethesda Metro Center 7 months, 4 weeks ago
Hi Lola - We agree that this location should serve various generations of Bethesda residents in an organic manner that will accommodate changes in residents' expectations and desires in years to come.
Brookfield commented on Bethesda Metro Center 7 months, 4 weeks ago
Thanks, Lola. That is one of the primary goals for the design of open space for this project. We want to provide for a safe area (away from the noise and traffic of Wisconsin Avenue) for people to come and relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, read a book, etc. Our Central Lawn will also serve as a canvas for events for the public to enjoy free of charge through our ArtsBrookfield programming.

Hi Lola - We fully agree! We look forward to making badly needed improvements to the bus bay area. This will be an important aspect of the project. In addition to providing for better color and lighting, we look forward to providing improved way-finding and other enhancements to improve the pedestrian experience.
Brookfield commented on Bethesda Metro Center 7 months, 4 weeks ago
This is a very good idea, Lola. Through our ArtsBrookfield program, we could certainly dedicate artistic ideas that highlight the history of Bethesda for the benefit of the community.

Hi Lola - We will be continuing our public outreach through this website and through on-site outreach in the near future (more to come on that front). We agree that this location should serve various generations of Bethesda residents in an organic manner that will accommodate changes in residents' expectations and desires in years to come.
