City of Saint John commented on Central Peninsula Neighbourhood Action Plan 1 year ago
Hi Jane,

Thanks for your feedback and for attending the public open house last week. Regarding the update of the Heritage By-law, we are planning on adopting the amendments to the Heritage By-law with the adoption of the final neighbourhood plan. While a hard date has not yet been set for final adoption, we are aiming to initiate the process before Spring with the goal of final adoption before Summer.

Hold that thought re: Riverview Drive for the west side neighbourhood plan!

Excellent idea Chris, do you see an area in particular where this kind of set up would work best?

That's a great idea Luke. Some of this work is planned for this summer.

Thank you for your comments Andy. There is a litter bylaw. Enforcement can be a balance between priorities.

Thanks for your feedback Tony. Temporary uses could play a large part in activating some of these key sites.

Thanks for your comment Melissa. The plan will be a great opportunity to ensure this city-owned asset is providing what the community wants.

Thanks for your comments, interesting that you cannot get into the uptown or south end without passing through Union. Union Street has been and continues to be an automobile-oriented street but also an edge, in land use and the point of termination of the central peninsula's grid pattern. Where might you rank Union Street in priority against other main thoroughfares, e.g. Waterloo, Water, Broad, King, or others?

That's a very good point Trent. There are a great number of buildings in the North End with historical value and the neighbourhood has a compact urban form that provides great potential for neighbourhood planning initiatives.

As part of the City's overall proposed program for neighbourhood planning, several geographies, including the North End, are identified for neighbourhood plans.

We agree Peter, that site needs to change. The 2003 Inner harbour land use plan envisioned it as an expansive open space. How do we ensure any future redevelopment is a high quality space that everyone has bought into?

Thank you Carl, we'll keep that in mind for over the life cycle of this planning process.

Thanks Katie. Although, anecdotally, there are dispensers and signs in Queen Square and not everything is picked up there either. How can we ensure our public spaces, including the street, are clean and well valued?

Hi Steve thanks for your comment. Currently the City's development incentives program is in year 2/3 and is geared towards increasing residential density through grants for developing vacant lots, upper storeys, and vacant buildings. Maybe if more residents come businesses will follow.

Thank you for your feedback Luke. The neighbourhood plan will be coordinated with MoveSJ, the City's 25 Year Transportation Plan, which is currently under development.

Thanks for your input Brendan. Is there a particular area of parking you find problematic on the waterfront and an area of the lower west side that would be more suitable?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Randy. Schools are considerably important to neighbourhoods. To learn more about the District Education Council (DEC) school review, visit the timeline section. The DEC report was included in the meeting package for the May 4th Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting.
