Thanks for the feedback Leigh. We've hosted a few meetings with abutters and have heard similar feedback. We definitely think there are design considerations to be made about how the Greenway interacts specifically with your homes in terms of light into your homes, and it's something we are working on.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 6 months ago
We are too, Mary. We hope this process helps illuminate how neighbor's feel about the tunnel cap and what we can do as a community to make this a usable, safe, and friendly community asset.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 6 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Bo -- we are designing for longterm maintenance and security. If the community supports the project moving forward, our plan is to fundraise not only for the purposes of construction but a long-term endowment for maintenance, programming, and upkeep.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 6 months ago
Hi Brian -- thanks for the feedback and we're excited about your enthusiasm. Please stay engaged with the project as we want to make sure we hear from the abutters about specific concerns they might have about the project.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 6 months ago
Callboxes are a great suggestion -- we definitely think that they should be components of the hardscaping and safety infrastructure in this project.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 6 months ago
Love the idea of raised crossings -- one design feature we're paying a lot of attention to is how people will be safe as they cross the streets that span the Greenway. Crossing beacons and raised crossings would be great.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 6 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Evan -- what types of amenities would you prioritize?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Hi Raymond -- thanks for the feedback. We are working with the city to present our vision and work with them as a partner in this work.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Hi Vicki, thanks for your feedback. The thinking is to have a train-spotting platform near Park Street where the train exits to Fields Corner.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Bill -- you make some good points about balancing utility and space constraints!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Hi Jane, the stretch is about 1.3 miles.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Great ideas Rosanne -- once we get to the implementation stage, we will definitely try to be as environmentally conscious as possible!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Hi Mary, are there any features about the Highline that you really enjoy that you'd like to see here?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Maura -- we're working with city partners to come up with a maintenance plan that would keep the space clean and vibrant!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Great ideas Thatiana -- are there any fun and interesting facts that you definitely think should be captured?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Thanks Christophe -- it has been the goal of Greater Ashmont Main Street for some time to revitalize this space into a community benefit. We hope that outreach and listening to stakeholders gives us additional clarity on how to enhance the space. Please stay involved and tell your neighbors too!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Hi Mark, we haven't yet gotten into specific designs for specific locations. Some abutters have expressed wanting access from their property and some have asked for fences, so we're still sorting it out. Right now, at cross streets, there would be a way to get to the Greenway but other access points are to be determined.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Thanks Ian -- safety and enjoyment are both paramount features for us. Some safety features we're considering including well-lit paths, call boxes, and improved crosswalks. What other safety features would you like to see?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
We'd love to activate the space too -- we're excited to work together with the community to figure out what works best.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Love these ideas Janelle, thank you for these! The QR codes are a great idea because they provide some amount of flexibility in swapping out material periodically.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Hi Alison, thanks for the feedback. Do you imagine these features equally distributed along the path or do you imagine them concentrated in one area?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Charles -- are there any specific features do you enjoy about the community path in Somerville and Cambridge?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Great ideas, Pieta. There's a groundswell of support for a safe bike network for families around Dorchester. We're adding our voice to those efforts as organizations like Dot Bike and Boston Cyclists Union also advocate for those needs. We see the DotGreenway as part of the bike network as outlined in the Boston 2030 plan.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 7 months ago
Thanks for that feedback Fred -- we really hope that developers see this as adding to the community, and as they will be part of the equation in shaping the future of the neighborhood, we want them to be invested in the project as well.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi John, as we responded before, we are not trying to raise suspicion or fear but rather start an open and inviting community dialogue for all. We are connecting with people who have been involved with those specific gardens in the past to learn from them and learn about what works best, so I hope in that process we can assuage the fears and suspicion you're experiencing. Please continue to work with us in this process and remain engaged and if you have specific questions, please come to the community meetings that are more design and implementation focused as the introductions to the project are intended to be short at this point.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi John -- sorry you're feeling that way -- at this point, we are in the design process and gathering community feedback. There are no definite construction plans at the moment or designs other than the concept drawings. As you can see from our timeline on the page, we acknowledge the hard work done by community members for the garden area between Melville and Centre, and we have been in communication with many of the residents who were involved in making those gardens a success. Unfortunately, at this stage, we are still gathering feedback and don't have any more details on how the designs will be integrated and we hope you stay involved and share your feedback with the team.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Chris -- Hubway is in the process of deciding new stops in Dorchester so we hope that they'll be in easy reach of the Greenway.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Agreed Lynn -- we hope that the Greenway can serve all three purposes you mentioned.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for your excitement -- we're excited too. We'll relay your feedback about paths to the design team as it is very helpful as we start to collate ideas from the community.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Michelle, thanks for the feedback. We definitely want the neighborhood participating and we'd love to get everyone participating sharing ideas however they feel comfortable. This website is one tool, but we'll be door-knocking and reaching out via neighborhood connections to try and get as many people involved as possible.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Megan -- the project team is currently all Dorchester residents and we are looking for other participants. Please stay tuned if you'd like to participate or if there are neighbors who you think might want to participate.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Do you have any favorite local Dorchester artists that you'd like us to work with?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
John, thanks for the feedback. We recognize that we need the support and wisdom of abutters in order to make this project a success. We definitely want the space to be safe and want to incorporate safety as a design parameter.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Emily! What do you like about the SW Corridor or the Harbour Walk that you want the design team to try to integrate here?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Noni -- thanks for your great feedback and ideas -- do you imagine a pop-up market, say for example at the Shawmut T station or do you imagine something distributed along the Greenway?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Mary -- we love that idea. The idea of creating a story along the Greenway that articulates Dorchester's history is a wonderful idea. If you know any local artists who you would like to get involved in the project, let us know. Thanks!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Jessica -- safety is super important for us, and we want to make sure we learn from the abutters about their concerns. We'll be organizing some specific meetings with abutters and would love to have you there. Please stay tuned for info.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Steven -- great feedback. We are hoping to do all the items on you mentioned. We're working on getting a few meetings with direct abutters set up, so if you're one, please stay tuned for info!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Paul -- getting the space up to a usable condition and safe is super important for us, but since this is a visioning exercise we'd also like to understand what the community would love to see because this is a unique opportunity and we'd like to be as bold as we can within the design parameters at hand.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Preston -- we are definitely looking to learn from precedent as much as possible. Low-stress and safe are definitely key design features for us.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Katiana -- what kind of events do you envision?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Megan -- we definitely want people to use the space with some frequency to both build community and create a critical mass that creates a sense of safety as well. Thanks for the feedback!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Nicole -- do you envision the gardens as community garden plots or something else?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Louis, thanks for the feedback -- if you know any local artists, send them our way!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
We appreciate the feedback Gerald -- security and safety is a huge concern in the design process. We welcome any creative ideas you might have if you have examples of what you think would work best!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Erin -- what would make the space beautiful in your opinion?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Dana; safety is paramount and is a huge consideration in the design process. If you have fun examples of interactive/functional art that you'd like to see, let us know!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Varsha -- we are planning on many feedback sessions and conversations with neighbors and direct abutters. This phase of the project is focused on creating a vision and also directly talking to people who would be affected by the Greenway to come up with a plan that is sensitive to those concerns. Please make sure to follow the page and stay tuned for updates on those meetings.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Varsha! Greater Ashmont Main Street has supported workforce housing in the past and many people highlighted this point at our community visioning session held in the spring, so we are making sure we capture the feedback that neighbors share and are sharing it with appropriate city departments.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Jeffery -- any particular moments in Dorchester history that you'd like to see captured?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Christina -- we'd love to see this utilized better! We hope that neighborhoods will be better connected through both these visioning conversations and when the actual Greenway is built.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Phil, this is a good point. Any construction will focus on this aspect, and we will make sure this gets addressed and that we work with partners to address this delicately.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Phil, we agree that we would like the Greenway to be integrated into the broader network across the city, and that is part of our design.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for that feedback Phil -- we've heard from others about a vendor at the Shawmut station. Do you just imagine something small like a coffee trike or a brick-and-mortar?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Elisa -- do you have any favorite innovative gardens that you like?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Ryan -- artist housing is an interesting idea. We'll look into it. Safe and peaceful is hugely important for us.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Britt -- any favorite plants?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the comment Britt -- would you be able to elaborate on what you mean by value capture? Sustainable funding the project is super important for us and as we crystallize our ideas and plans, we'll have a better sense of how much the project will cost.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Kurt, thanks for the feedback. An art contest is a great idea; it could be a great tool to encourage participation in the design and planning process.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Kirill -- safety will be paramount for this project; we want the space to be inviting and safe for all.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great ideas Carol -- we love the idea of active learning from neighbors who can teach us about their cultures and their lives through both formal and informal interactions.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Bill. We hope the space can be welcoming to all ages!

Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Lydia -- your recommendations are awesome. Do you know any local artists you'd like to connect us with? We would love to hear their thoughts. Coffee trike is a super interesting idea because it wouldn't require a brick-and-mortar space and we've been hearing an interest in coffee at the Shawmut station. Totally agree on trash and recycling cans as well; Greenway needs to stay clean!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
We're excited about new spaces for art like murals and definitely want history to be a part of the project. Glad to see you're excited about it too.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Chris -- we're excited about the Hubway expansion and are excited to look at potential cycling options on the Greenway.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Andrew -- We love the idea too and hope that through cautious design that we can make this possible!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Len -- we agree! We hope that this can provide a great space to relax, enjoy neighbors, and nature even nestled in the background of our own community.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for this idea -- do you imagine a rotating piece so we can capture many stories or a permanent fixed piece?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks David -- this is a great piece of feedback and we'll make sure this gets back to the designers on the project.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Sean -- any particular historical sites that you wouldn't want us to miss?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Outdoor theater sounds fun -- ampitheater or walk-in movie style?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks -- We hope that the Greenway will provide some connections with neighbors, retail, and neighborhoods in a way that gets people interacting and walking the neighborhood both on and off the Greenway.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Solar powered lighting and waste receptacles are great ideas. Love the idea of drinking fountains that are accessible to all Dorchester residents.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks David -- pet-friendly as in dog-park specific area or otherwise? How do you envision using the space with a pet?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Chris -- it's great to have examples of other projects so we can learn about what is possible. Any other favorites?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Yes definitely -- we want this project to respect and honor the neighborhood and give us a chance to highlight what is best about the neighborhood, the people and we want everyone to be involved, provide feedback, and help make this a great space for everyone.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Koren -- do you imagine a zone with these amenities (like trail fitness zone) or would you want these amenities distributed along greenway? Lawn games sound fun too -- permanent installations or just there seasonally?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great feedback -- we'd love to hear from abutters and non-abutters and will be sure at the construction phase to reach out directly to discuss abutter-specific construction concerns.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great ideas Leslie -- we definitely want to make sure the Greenway is designed for a variety of ages, young and old! Splash pad sounds fun and a great way to cool off in summer!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi Rachel, thanks for this feedback. We have a multi-prong approach to outreach through community groups, abutter conversations, talking to people in grocery stores, digital platforms such as this, and one-on-ones. We want to hear from as many people as possible to come up with this best project possible. We'd love to hear your ideas on other ways to reach people.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great ideas -- we are eager to capture the rich history of Dorchester in this project and want to incorporate the diversity of languages as well. Do you have examples that you love of how other projects have done this?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Love these ideas Rachel -- do you think the amenities should be concentrated in an area, distributed in zones (gardening zone, art zone, etc) or just a mix sprinkled throughout?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks! We definitely see one of the biggest goals of this project is connecting neighborhoods and people so this is a priority.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks -- we're learning a lot from other examples across the city and country. One event we've seen is a long community table that brought neighbors together for a community meal -- popup and totally fun; we'd love to see creative ways of bringing people together and also letting them relax!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great ideas Rachel -- we definitely want this to be a place that is open and inviting for all and with a mix of amenities to appeal to all these groups! Do you have examples of community ownership models that you really like?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Winston -- love these ideas; do you imagine a concentrated area with these amenities or them sprinkled along the Greenway?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Leslie -- any favorite trees?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Awesome, thanks! -- What types of features would make it beautiful? Murals? Sculptures?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great idea -- we love the idea of providing a safe, walkable way to get to schools. We'll see if we can add schools on to our next version of the map!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Winston! We're hoping that we can learn from the other examples across the city. The Southwest Corridor has separated bike and pedestrian paths -- what do you think about that for the Greenway?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks! Happy to see your excitement -- we hope that through conversation and cautious design that the end product will benefit the community as a whole!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Chris -- how do you imagine the garden alcoves -- maintained by individuals (community plot model) or professionally?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks David -- do you imagine these gardens as community garden plots or maintained professionally?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great ideas -- how do you imagine these amenities along Greenway? Concentrated or distributed throughout?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Martin -- do you have any favorite trees that you'd like to see?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks Andrew -- what design features would make it beautiful in your opinion?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks! We see the project integrating itself with other parts of the walking path and bicycle network and we'd love to be able to provide safe connections to other parts of the city.
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks -- we are working on that right now and look forward to sharing news soon :)
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks -- we like this idea! How do you envision coming together? Tables and chairs? Picnic tables? Conversation corners?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks for this -- what would make it beautiful in your opinion? Gardens? Art? Mix of both?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great ideas, thanks -- do you think these amenities should be concentrated in one area or distributed along the path?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks -- we're happy to hear that you see the potential in the space; we do too. Comfort is going to be a huge aspect of design -- any specific ways that you think the space can be made comfortable?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Hi David -- love the idea of the walking tour and connecting it to digital media to allow easier ways of updating. How many stops would you recommend? Do you have good examples of walking tours that made good use of digital and conventional media?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great idea -- do you have any favorite historical aspects that you want to make sure get considered?
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Great idea -- we definitely think storytelling about the neighborhood and the history is super important, and we want to be able to capture as much of it as possible in creative ways!
Greater Ashmont Main Streets commented on DotGreenway 5 years, 8 months ago
Thanks -- we definitely love the idea of learning from other examples. For others interested in learning about the Katy Trail, check this out: http://katytraildallas.org/
