What's in the Works

159 Riverside is a mixed-use, smart growth project planned for the River Arts District. The development team hopes to transform two adjacent sites totaling 4.5 acres in the heart of Asheville's RAD into public greenspace, 134 new housing units, and approximately 14,000 square feet of commercial space that includes artist studios, retail and restaurant space, and 182 off street parking places. This vibrant, public facing, neighborhood destination is also committed to walkability, open space, multi-modal transportation, and environmental stewardship .

Two exciting focal points of the 159 Riverside Project are structures currently on the property that aren't being utilized -- the old Mill Building and an old smokestack. We plan to incorporate both into the project plans and will be seeking community input on ideas for how to do so.

What's There Now

The land at 159 Riverside has the remains of a Cotton Mill boiler and smokestack. The 144 Riverside property is designated as open space, so no structures of any significance are allowed.

What's Happening Next

The project received approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission on July 7th. The final step in the entitlement process is the Asheville City Council Meeting on August 24th.

We hope to continue engaging with neighbors and stakeholders regarding the project as we go forward. We share the common goal of continuing to make the RAD better for all who live and work here.
