BRIDGE Housing Corporation was born of an act of generosity. In 1983, an anonymous donation to the San Francisco Foundation enabled the philanthropic organization to create BRIDGE in an effort to address the city’s ever-present housing shortage. Since then, the nonprofit has helped build new foundations for families and communities from San Diego to Seattle, with 18,000 homes in more than 100 properties – almost all of them permanently affordable. BRIDGE is also the long-term manager of over 12,000 affordable units.

Daniel Savala is a lifelong Sacramentan who joined the Del Paso Boulevard Partnership as its executive director in 2021. The property and business improvement district works to strengthen the retail corridor of this part of North Sacramento.
Savala is a big proponent of increased housing density in his community, which he pinpoints as “the most important thing for the long-term success of Del Paso Boulevard.” He sees affordable housing as about helping everyday working folks who struggle to even pay rent in Sacramento’s changing market.

A plan to build a large affordable housing complex at a long-vacant Sacramento armory is moving forward. The Sacramento City Council will Tuesday consider applying for a state grant for the project at the corner of Arden Way and Oxford Street near Woodlake Park.

When Governor Gavin Newsom put out a call for more affordable housing development, BRIDGE Housing Corporation answered. In 2021, Newsom signed legislation designed to increase production, streamline permitting and make use of state-owned excess land, while at the same time encouraging developers to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices. BRIDGE’s 440 Arden project is just what the governor asked for.
