Construction of the new 50 York St apartment building will be starting soon. Just-A-Start has selected NEI General Contracting for this project. NEI is a very experienced contractor that has worked successfully on many similar buildings in an urban environment. We expect the building permit to be issued shortly, and the anticipated construction start date is next Monday, November 12th.
The first step in construction will be removing the foundations from the old building and preparing the site for utility work. After the old foundations are removed ground improvement piers will be installed into drilled holes to rest the new foundation on good bearing soils. This method of foundation construction was selected to eliminate the need for excavation which would last longer and have greater impact on the community.
Installing the aggregate piers will be quick, and should only take a week, however, there will be some ground vibrations during installation and for that reason, JAS has hired a construction testing company, UTS, to monitor the vibration levels at adjacent building to make sure they stay below the limits allow by Law. Although the start of this project will likely be the most challenging to the abutting property owners and their tenants, we will complete it as quickly as possible. After this there will continue to be noise impacts from construction and deliveries, but we will do our best to keep noise levels down and will follow the City of Cambridge construction site noise and work hour requirements.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during the construction process. We appreciate the support of so many of our neighbors in rebuilding this essential part of the neighborhood.
Cambridge DPW will be hosting a neighborhood BBQ at Donnelly Field on Tuesday, 9/26 from 5-7 pm. All are welcome to join to enjoy free food and beverages, music, bike safety check-ups, and free family fun!
