Cleveland Public Library is transforming Sterling Branch into a vibrant, fully renovated community library. Sterling Branch will be a library of the future that respects the historical nature of the building and the neighborhood.

FACILITIES MASTER PLAN - FUTURE VISION

It is recommended that the historic structure of this branch be maintained but with a major interior renovation and a significant addition increasing the building size. This would require acquisition of the land immediately south of the library that currently houses a Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority office building. Extending south with a new, more transparent, addition would not only increase the usable area to better serve the community but also provide a more visible presence at the corner. With the addition, the size of the branch will be able to expand its services however based on the location and limitations of parking it is recommended this remain a Neighborhood Branch.

The site is currently the 1913 library building.

FACILITIES MASTER PLAN - CURRENT STATE

As one of the Carnegie branches the building has historic value and, while in need of some significant upgrades and repairs, it is still viable to retain. The building is small with a rigid, introverted layout that pushes support and meeting spaces to the front of the building. In spite of its size it is a well-attended branch and has the lowest square foot to visit ratio in the system. The branch is located adjacent to a large affordable housing project and a school but acquisition of adjacent property would be required for expansion.
