What's in the Works

Mt. Baker Housing and Lake Union Partners are transforming the contaminated brownfield site at the intersection of S. Grand St. and Rainier Ave. S into a vibrant new gateway mixed use development. The proposed Grand Street Commons will create 300+ affordable housing units and 400 market rate housing, new retail, office space, and a large public plaza and gathering space.

Mt. Baker Housing (MBH) is a place-based organization dedicated to serving low and moderate income households in southeast Seattle. MBH’s mission is to improve lives and strengthen communities in southeast Seattle by creating quality affordable housing and supporting our residents.

What's There Now

The site is currently vacant and contaminated from former dry cleaners. There is an unused alley that crosses the site. We have proposed eliminating it in order to increase the number of affordable housing units and create a large public plaza. Eliminating the city-owned alley is called a "vacation". This process includes adding public amenities that serve the neighborhood. We have been soliciting neighborhood feedback for over a year and have received over 350 comments. We appreciate all the feedback & have been able to incorporate much of what we heard in the design the public plaza.

What's Happening Next

A Master Use Permit has been approved & is awaiting issuance until the City Council can vote on approving the alley vacation and the new design, currently scheduled for October 18.
