What's in the Works

Northwest Neighborhoods CDC (formerly Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization) is transforming the corner of West 80th Street and Detroit Avenue into a vibrant new community hub. The proposed Karam Senior Living will serve households making at or below 60% of Area Median Income (AMI) and comprised of at least one senior age 55+ through the development of a safe, adaptable, service-enriched community hub. The new energy efficient building will provide 51 units and spaces for connection & wrap-around programming through the new Walz branch of the library, developed concurrently. Project amenities include a community room, laundry facilities, on-site parking and a wellness center.

What's There Now

The site is currently a distressed multi-family apartment building scheduled for demolition as well as several parcels of vacant land.

What's Happening Next

The project team received demolition approval from the city Landmarks Commission for the Detroit Chateau in August of 2020. NNCDC secured a loan to relocate residents (in progress) and will complete the subsequent demolition by early 2022.
The project team went before the Gordon Square Local Landmarks in August of 2021 and the City of Cleveland Landmarks Committee in September 2021 for conceptual review. No approval was requested. The updates made to the project between the 2020 and 2021 meetings was well received.
The project team plans to host several community meetings between now and construction commencement. Stay tuned for updates!
The project team submitted the project and updated drawings for final approval to the Ohio Housing Finance Agency on September 23rd, 2021.
