What's in the Works

In 2017, MARTA announced a joint venture with Place Properties and H.J. Russell & Company to build a transit-oriented development (TOD) at King Memorial Station. The vision is to create a community that people enjoy walking through, and to facilitate improved connectivity between the station and the neighborhoods to the south. The project will complement ongoing redevelopment efforts along Memorial Drive and its historic surroundings. This project is part of MARTA's broader TOD initiative, which seeks to increase ridership, generate revenue, and support both local community development and regional economic development.

What's There Now

The project will be located on 4.4 acres of underutilized surface parking on the south side of King Memorial Station on the Blue and Green Lines, two stops from Downtown Atlanta. Two bus routes also serve this station. This site is located in the historic Grant Park neighborhood. Directly to the east of the project is Oakland Cemetery, a garden cemetery founded in 1850. It is the final resting place of many of Atlanta’s settlers and builders, and notable citizens like Bobby Jones, Margaret Mitchell, and Maynard Jackson. It's also a showplace of sculpture and architecture, and a botanical preserve with ancient oaks and magnolias.

King Memorial Station also serves the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, which includes Dr. King's Birth Home, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Dr. and Mrs. King's gravesite, and the Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Approximately three blocks to the north of the station is the Atlanta Streetcar, which provides service to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Centennial Olympic Park.

What's Happening Next

Construction is scheduled to start in the fall of 2017. This will be the first multi-family project in Atlanta to use modular construction, a process in which a building is constructed in a factory off-site using the same materials and designing to the same codes and standards as conventionally built facilities. Buildings are produced in modules then transported to and assembled on site, resulting in a more efficient and cost effective process.
