During this period access to Wadsworth from Memorial will be closed as needed on a daily basis. Drivers on Memorial Drive should access the Kendall Square area via Ames Street. Please see the attached map showing the driving pattern for the area.

Cambridge Trust Bank opens in new location May 15

On Monday, May 15, the Cambridge Trust Bank is scheduled to open at their new location at 415 Main Street, next to Sebastians. The current location at 326 Main Street is scheduled to close on Friday, May 12 and plans are underway to demolish the existing building later this month.

Thank you for your patience during the Kendall Square construction work. These changes are making way for new buildings and the creation of green spaces just south of Main Street in the center of Kendall Square. The current site of the Cambridge Trust Bank will become the future home of the MIT Museum and MIT Press bookstore, along with other offices and groups, providing a welcoming entry when folks emerge from the MBTA station into Kendall Square. A new below-grade garage will provide parking for daily users and visitors with dedicated spaces for electric and low-emitting vehicles. Learn more about the project plans in this news article.

Traffic pattern change 5/1 - 5/3

From Monday, 5/1 through Wednesday, 5/3 during working hours of 7am - 6pm, the block of Wadsworth Street between Amherst St and Memorial Drive will be closed to all vehicular traffic to accommodate excavation equipment operating in the street. Drivers on Memorial Drive who wish to access points north should enter the site via Ames Street.

Starting Thursday, 5/4, this block of Wadsworth St will resume one-lane traffic traveling north from Memorial Drive during working hours.

Construction Update: January 16-27, 2017

NEW FORMAT BELOW!

Click to download Two-Week Lookahead Impact Chart and Map of Work.

Starting this week we are trying out a new means of communicating project updates. Below you will find a list of activities occurring on site, organized by street. Each activity marks which days it will occur over the next two weeks, and what impacts to expect. The impact categories for each activity include the following:

  • Noise
  • Vibration
  • Odor
  • Sidewalk Closure
  • Street Closure
  • Parking Impact

Activities are coded and you can refer to the map below for a visual of each of the coded activities. If you are most concerned about work on Carleton Street, for example, you can simply refer directly to the Carleton Street section for a quick glance of what to expect.

We will update the chart of activities every two weeks and post them here. You may also download the chart and the map if you wish to enlarge or save either document. These can be found under Information & Plans on the CoUrbanize home page.

Construction Update: January 1-15, 2017

Happy New Year! Work continues on Amherst, Carleton, and Hayward Streets in January. To download the construction map, please click here.

As work increases both in the street and for the start of the Kendall Garage, we will begin to issue construction updates twice per month to keep the public informed of the ongoing work. This scope covers work to expect over the next two weeks.

The scope of work includes:

  • Chilled water pipe installation on Amherst St in front of Senior House (E2)
  • Sanitary pipe installation on Amherst St in front of 100 Memorial Drive apartments
  • Water pipe installation on Carleton St in front of MIT Medical (E23)
  • Water pipe installation on Hayward St next to Muckley Building (E40)
  • Eversource work in Charlotte's Way (Deacon St) next to the Kendall Hotel and Eversource work in Wadsworth St next to Eastgate

Street closures include the following:

  • Wadsworth St from Main St to the entrance of the Eastgate/Sloan parking lot will be closed while Eversource digs a trench for a new electrical ductbank. Access to the parking lot will be maintained from the south, via Memorial Drive. Please see Update #8 for more details.
  • Two way traffic will be maintained on all streets where possible, via traffic flagmen to direct traffic.

Parking lot and on-street parking impacts include the following:

  • The parking lot behind 290 Main St & 292 Main St (E38 & E39) remain closed.
  • The Hayward Annex Lot and the lot behind 238 Main St (E48) are closed as of 1/4/17.
  • Wadsworth St on-street parking is removed during construction of the Eversource ductbank.
  • Amherst St on-street parking is removed during construction of the chilled water and sanitary pipes from Senior House to 100 Memorial Drive.
  • RPP-only parking has been added to Ames Street to accommodate the loss of on-street parking for residents in the area.

Please feel free to reach out to us here or at kendallsquare@mit.edu with any further questions. Thank you!

Wadsworth St Temporary Closure

Starting approximately Tuesday, January 3rd, the section of Wadsworth St between Main St and the backside of 238 Main (E48), shown above, will be closed. The street closure is to allow Eversource to install a new electrical ductbank across Wadsworth St that will connect a temporary transformer yard to 238 Main St and provide temporary power to both 238 Main and the future Kendall Garage during construction.

Eversource will ensure that one sidewalk on either side of Wadsworth Street will remain open at all times. Traffic from Memorial Drive to Wadsworth St will still be able to access the parking lot associated with Eastgate and the Sloan campus, and traffic coming down Main Street from either direction will be re-routed down Hayward St for anyone looking to reach Amherst St and Memorial Drive.

This work will take approximately 4-5 weeks to complete, at which point Wadsworth St will be re-opened to traffic. Thank you!

Construction Update: December 2016

To download the construction map, please click here.

Construction in Kendall Square will take place on Amherst, Carleton, and Wadsworth Streets through December.

The scope of work includes:

  • Installation of new water lines in Carleton & Hayward Street
  • Installation of chilled water lines in Amherst Street, between Ames St & Carleton St
  • Installation of new sanitary lines in Amherst St, between Carleton St & Wadsworth St

Traffic patterns put in place include the following:

  • North-to-south one-way traffic on Carleton St (from Main St towards Amherst St)
  • East-to-west one-way traffic on Amherst St (from Sloan towards the Media Lab)
  • South-to-north one-way traffic on Hayward St (from Amherst St towards Main St)

At least one sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians on all streets through the duration of this work. Work hours will commence from 7am - 6pm daily, although most days work on-site is complete by 3pm.

The new MIT medical parking lot is open across from E23 on Carleton Street, and the entire Hayward Lot parking lot has been closed. Handicap ramps will be installed in front of E23 to direct handicap pedestrians to the medical parking lot.

Thank you as always for your patience with construction, and please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

Update on Food Truck Relocations

Food Trucks are on the Move!

Beginning Monday, November 28 find food trucks Jose’s Mexican, Momogoose, and Jerusalem Café at these new locations:

• Between E14 & E23 (Media Lab & MIT Medical, at Amherst and Carleton Street)
• Between Buildings 56 & 66 (in North Court)
• Between Buildings 14 & 50 (Hayden & Walker, just south of McDermott Court)

Trucks will rotate locations on a weekly basis, with one truck at each location through the first week in January. If the sites are a success, these locations will remain active for the next couple of years.

The food trucks typically operate from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday-Friday.

Please email foodstuff@mit.edu with any questions or feedback about the new locations.

Visit here for more information, including a map of the new locations: http://studentlife.mit.edu/dining/retail-dining/food-trucks-are-move.

Construction Update:  November 2016

Construction will continue for the Kendall Square at MIT project this month with the installation of new water piping on Carleton and Hayward Streets and continued installations of utilities on Amherst Street.

A few quick notes for the public:

* We will be converting certain metered parking spaces to RPP spaces on Ames Street, across the street from the Media Lab, to replace RPP spaces temporarily removed on Amherst Street to accommodate the construction zones.

* The remaining portion of the Hayward Lot will close in early November, and all of the Medical parking spaces will be re-located to the new Medical parking lot located across the street from E23.

* One-way traffic on Carleton and Hayward Streets will be established as work zones begin to be erected.

* Temporary utility poles will be erected on Carleton and Wadsworth Street to accommodate the transition of overhead to underground electrical and low-voltage lines, but these poles will not impede pedestrian access on those sidewalks.

And more details, if you're interested:

There will be work in the intersections of Carleton/Amherst and Hayward/Amherst Streets over the next two weeks as we excavate and install water piping at those intersections. During those work periods, traffic will be carefully routed down Amherst Street with the use of police details to go around the mid-street work zones.

By mid-November, we also plan to be continuing in Amherst Street with further utilities installations that started in September. Like the first work zone, this will be on the south side of Amherst Street and will work its way east toward Wadsworth Street.

If you have any questions regarding the construction work on site, please contact Alison Crowley at: acrowley@mitimco.mit.edu.

Construction Update: October 2016

Construction has started in Kendall Square! You may have seen blue fencing erected around the Hayward Street Lot and on a portion of Amherst Street. Along with that fencing, here's what's happening in October:

* Amherst Street is now one-way, east to west, through the end of 2016. We will be installing new utilities in the south side of the street and during that time, on-street parking will be temporarily removed.

* A new parking lot for visitors to the MIT Medical building (E23) has been constructed next to E33 and E34 and will be accessible from Carleton Street throughout the duration of construction.

* The remainder of the Hayward Lot will be fenced off for construction equipment and materials in the first week of October.

* Carleton Street will become one-way, north to south, beginning this month as a single lane is captured for the new installation of utilities. As always, ambulance access to E23 will be maintained, and vehicles parking in the new Medical parking lot will have access.

If you have any questions regarding the construction work on site, please contact Alison Crowley at: acrowley@mitimco.mit.edu.

Construction Update: September 2016

Beginning after Labor Day, construction will begin at Kendall Square! Through September 2016, you may see the following:

* Fencing to be erected on Carleton, Amherst, and Hayward Streets to create a laydown area for Turner Construction to bring materials and equipment.

* Trees and bushes will be removed next to E33 (34 Carleton St) and on Hayward Street to accommodate temporary construction curb cuts for truck entrances and to build a parking lot specifically for MIT Medical users headed to E23 (25 Carleton St)

* Single-lane closure on Amherst Street at the intersection of Amherst & Carleton to excavate and install sanitary piping and manholes

* Minor modifications to the loading docks behind E38 (292 Main St), E39 (290 Main St), and E48 (238 Main St) to accommodate construction vehicle circulation

* Temporary curb cuts and sidewalk modifications at the corner of Carleton St & Charlotte's Way, behind E39 (290 Main St) and behind E40 (1 Amherst St)

If you have any questions regarding the construction work on site, please contact Alison Crowley at: acrowley@mitimco.mit.edu.
