Construction Update: September 21th - October 6th
Street and Sidewalk Impacts
Wadsworth Street –The street will remain closed to vehicular traffic from Amherst Street to Memorial Drive (between Buildings E51 and E52) 24 hours a day until certain unforeseen conditions are managed ad resolved. The project team anticipates this work to last at least 2-3 more weeks. Construction activities include equipment set up and staging for utility installation. Vehicles on Memorial Drive should access the Kendall Square area via Ames Street. (W1).
Utilities will continue to be installed on the north side of Wadsworth Street towards Main Street (W2). The work will require a lane to be occupied and fenced in due to the depth of the excavation. The sidewalk will remain open and there is no pedestrian detour, vehicle traffic will be limited to one way from Main Street to Amherst Street.
Carleton Street –The excavation between Carleton Street and the driveway ramp to E23/E25 will continue to be restored (C1). This will require some noisy activities and possible temporary ramp impacts to occur. Any ramp work will utilize police details to maintain traffic flow.
Amherst Street – Chilled water installation and survey work will take place along Amherst next to E40 and E51. (A1) Access to the buildings will remain open but pedestrians may need to be detoured to alternate routes during the work.
On Friday, 9/22 and Sunday, 9/24, the project will be performing a chilled water shutdown and tie-in. This work will require the E40 main entrance on Amherst Street to be closed while the work occurs (A4). Access and egress to the building will be coordinated during this work.
Chilled water (A2) and gas (A3) utilities will continue from Ames Street to Wadsworth Street.
A steam manhole will be installed in the grassy area just to the south of E23. This work is scheduled to take a week to complete. The driveway to the Media Lab may be slightly impacted but vehicles and pedestrians will have access around the work area. (A5)
Work will begin at 100 Memorial Drive to install an ejector pit.
General Construction Update
The slurry wall and secant wall installation will commence on Site 5 (former Cambridge Trust site) starting the week of 9/25 (S1). This work may create vibration in the immediate area. We anticipate sheeting operations to begin in late October along Main Street.
The pre-trenching work ahead of the sheeting installation activities has been changed to commence on Site 4 (bordered between Carleton, Main, Hayward and Amherst Streets) (S2). Sheeting installation is scheduled to commence in this area on October 2nd. This work may create noise and vibration in the immediate area.
Work continues on the Kendall Garage behind 290-292 Main (E38-E39), and 238 Main (E48). This includes:
- Slurry Wall (Support of the Excavation) installation.
- Daily deliveries of steel and concrete.
- Daily trucking to remove material from the site.
E38 interior and exterior renovation activities will continue.
E39 Foundation activities will continue.
Police details will be utilized throughout the project area to assist with pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Saturday Work – General construction activities will continue on Saturdays. Work will occur within the City of Cambridge allowable work hours, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
MBTA Main Street Plaza – The pedestrian plaza connecting Carleton Street to the inbound Kendall Square MBTA Station on Main Street is closed fully for the duration of the project to allow construction of an underground garage in this area. Pedestrians will be guided to seek alternate paths to and from the station using Ames Street, Deacon/Dock Street, or Wadsworth Street.
Access to the MBTA station and elevator will remain open and accessible on the Main Street side of the station throughout this work.
