CoUrbanize commenting now closed - but you can still engage!

Hello Newporters,

At this point, we must close this coUrbanize site to additional comments in order to finalize development of the draft plan. Thank you all for engaging with us through this platform, we appreciate all of the people who took the time to come here and share their thoughts.

Though commenting via this site is no longer an option, there will be additional opportunities to comment publicly on the plan. As the City review process moves into its next phase, a full draft will be available to the public; Newporters will be able to share feedback on the NEUP through public hearings and directly with the Planning & Economic Development Department.

Thanks!

NEUP Process Update & Draft Recommendations Presentation - Follow-up

Hello Newporters,

First, thank you to the more than 80 participants in last Thursday's Update & Draft Recommendations Presentation! The level of engagement with the material the project team presented was admirable and very much appreciated. We heard some great questions from those who were able to join, and many of you provided invaluable feedback for the drafting of the plan.

For those of you were unable to join the virtual session, the presentation materials and a video recording of the meeting are now available in the Information & Plans section at the bottom of the main page of this site. We strongly encourage you to review both and provide feedback by either contacting the Planning & Economic Development Department or johnharlow7@gmail.com.

City staff are currently reviewing the draft North End Urban Plan and are planning to send that document to the Planning Board in late August, which begins the public hearing process.

Thanks again!

North End Urban Plan Drafting Phase

Dear Newporters,

Thank you all again for your understanding as our planning process adjusts to an unprecedented global and local public health emergency.

Thanks also to those Newporters who took the time to complete the Online Public Forum Survey! The survey, which closed on May 18th, garnered nearly 150 substantially complete responses and provided the City and project team with invaluable feedback and insight. While it is unfortunate that Public Forum #2 could not be held as an in-person event, the number and level of detail of the responses demonstrated that even an online version could support meaningful and constructive conversation about the North End. Your responses to the survey - along with the results of Public Forum #1, the project team’s analysis, and the many helpful conversations with residents and stakeholders - will serve as a basis for the plan’s recommendations.

Now that the survey period has closed, the project team has moved on to drafting the plan document. A critical step in that process was a second Steering Committee meeting, which took place on June 16th. During that virtual meeting, the project team gave a presentation that summarized the survey results and began articulating the recommendations for the North End Urban Plan. A recording of that meeting, the presentation materials, and a summary of the survey results can all now be found in the Plans & Information section of this project site. We encourage all of you to review these materials and reach out with questions, concerns, and recommendations.

A draft of the plan will be provided to the Planning Board during the second week of July, at which point that Board will begin its review process. After its review, there will be additional opportunities for the public to provide input, through public hearings with the Planning Board and City Council.

If you have any questions, please direct them to John Harlow at johnharlow7@gmail.com.

Thank you again, and we wish you a healthy and safe beginning to your summer.

ONLINE INPUT NOW LIVE

Dear Newporters,

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as due to concerns over the corona virus outbreak, we have moved North End Urban Plan activities online.

You can now visit https://courb.co/northend to review and refine the project team's draft materials. We urge you to share that link widely with your friends, family, and colleagues, so that we can gather as much feedback from Newporters as possible.

The City of Newport is closely monitoring the corona virus situation and, if possible, will schedule a second in-person Public Forum when it is deemed safe for the community to do so. However, please note that the survey available at the link above may be the last opportunity for public input into the plan.

If it is not possible to schedule a second in-person public forum, an end date for responses to this survey will be emailed to the project contact list, in order to give the project team enough time to process and incorporate the community's perspectives into the final plan.

Thank you very much for your patience and understanding as we prioritize public health. If you have any questions, please direct them to John Harlow at <johnharlow7@gmail.com>.

Best,

The North End Urban Plan Project Team

NOW ONLINE ONLY

Dear Newporters,

As you might have guessed, due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak, we will be moving all North End Urban Plan activities online for the remainder of the project.

This decision is being taken based on public health recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Rhode Island Department of Health. This means we’ll be holding the following events online rather than in-person:

  • North End Urban Plan Steering Committee meeting on Tues., March 17th
  • Second North End Urban Plan Public Forum on Wed., March 18th
  • The Drop-in Center on Wed., March 18th and Thurs., March 19th

All remaining planning activities will be accessible through our online comment portal: https://courb.co/northend. Please be sure to click that link to sign up (if you have not already joined) and feel free to share with your friends, family, and coworkers.

We expect to have draft documents from the consultant team online for the community’s review by 5 p.m. next Wednesday, March 18th.

Please note that we can only continue to collect online comments through Sunday, March 22nd, in order to give our team enough time to process and incorporate the community’s perspectives into final products before the project deadline of Wednesday, April 8th.

Thank you very much for your patience and understanding as we prioritize public health. If you have any questions, please direct them to John Harlow at <johnharlow7@gmail.com>.

Thank you to everyone who has commented so far!

We will be analyzing and sorting all your comments to make sure they get to the right technical expert, who will incorporate them into their process and into the plan.

To continue the dialogue, we’ve added a couple new questions about Streetscape and Stormwater. Click through these new topics (and the old ones) here. Remember to click "support" when you see an idea you like!

We'd also like to remind you of our upcoming Drop-in Center from 10am—4pm next Tues 2/25 and Wed 2/26. Our consultant team will be available at the Florence Gray Center (1 York St, Newport), at the entrance near the base of the flagpole.

Lastly, we hope to see you at our first Public Forum, next Tues 2/25 from 5—8pm at the MET East Bay School (115 Girard Ave, Newport). You can RSVP and find information about the forum here.

Thanks for your interest and support!
