We’ll be hosting a pre-submission community meeting for Patuxent Commons on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 6PM in the Banquet Room of The Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring, Columbia, MD 21055.
The development team will present information on the project to the community, in advance of submitting our site development plan to the Department of Planning and Zoning in early 2023.
We look forward to seeing you and your neighbors, and answering questions you may have.
We are excited to take to this important step in the County permitting process as we work to make Patuxent Commons a reality. Thank you!
While our team continues to move through design development and preparation of our Site Development Plan submission to the County, we wanted to share with you what’s been heard thus far:
· Community connection is vital to the project, through outreach and community events. The community has expressed interest in collaborative volunteer programs and events for the nearby neighborhood and the Patuxent Commons residents to socialize and create connections with one another.
· Tree preservation is important to many. Our plan currently maintains as many trees as possible across the site. We are also planning a community garden and programmed outdoor spaces onsite.
Patuxent Commons looks forward to being a good neighbor in the Hickory Ridge community.
Stay tuned for an announcement about a Pre-Submission Community Meeting towards the end of the year.
Thank you for all the participation and input on shaping the plans for Patuxent Commons. We’d like to ask for your support to encourage the County Council to approve CR29. This bill would provide necessary approvals for the project to proceed, including a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) and an Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance (APFO) waiver.
You can sign up to testify on CR29 on March 21st at 7PM, or please contact the County Councilmembers and encourage them to the support the bill! The final vote will take place April 4th.
See our Advocacy page for more information.
We are thrilled to share the news that Patuxent Commons was awarded almost $2.5 million in funding by the HUD 811 program, which is a competitive federal program targeted to supportive housing for individuals with disabilities. This funding award is a major step toward making Patuxent Commons a reality. State financing awards are still pending, but are expected to be announced in the next several months.
On November 17th, the Howard County Delegation held a public hearing via Webex, where the public was allowed to testify on all proposed local legislation for Howard County in the 2021 Regular Session of the Maryland General Assembly .
The Patuxent Commons Team was pleased to provide testimony in support of Ho. Co. 17-21, a legislative bond initiative (LBI) proposed to help finance the construction of Patuxent Commons.
We are thrilled that the LBI was included in the Delegation's local legislation, and especially appreciate Delegate Jessica Feldmark's sponsorship.
LBIs are subject to funding through the State budget process, which occurs in Spring 2021.

To recap, during the meeting we presented the project history, concept, preliminary design, and potential timeline. We appreciated the thoughtful questions posed, and the focus on how the project reflects the values of the Columbia community.
We look forward to providing updates on the results of competitive financing applications already submitted for the project, some of which should be announced before the end of the year.
