Shirley Ave Participatory Budgeting
Project location
Revere, MA
Project phase
Community review
Participatory budgeting is a democratic process where community members decide how part of a budget is spent. Our Shirley Ave TDI Partnership is excited to invite the neighborhood to participate in budgeting up to $560,000 in City funding for improvements to outdoor spaces (which we call "the public realm") in and around Shirley Ave.
We are working closely with residents to create a collaborative vision for the neighborhood. Shirley Ave Participatory Budgeting will directly inform the use of public funding for streetscape, greenspace, public art, and other outdoor improvements in the neighborhood over the next year.
We are currently in the VOTING phase of the process. That means, its time for you and fellow Shirley Ave community members to rank the projects proposed by the neighborhood according to your priorities. You can do this on the feedback tab of the site. You can also get the word out by sharing this project with your neighbors, family, and friends. Please be sure to vote by December 31, when our digital polls close!
Participatory budgeting gives real people power over real money! There are four phases to participatory budgeting:
Community ideas: add your ideas to the map!
Proposal development: the City of Revere and a focus group of neighborhood stakeholders will determine a realistic cost for ideas proposed by the community in phase one.
Voting: community members will cast their ballot and indicate which of the proposals developed in phase two should be funded with the $555,000 available.
Project implementation: this is when the spending starts and the change happens!
Stay involved as the project progresses by subscribing for updates. You can also email the TDI Fellow for Revere, Laura Christopher, to set a time to discuss your ideas and the participatory budgeting process.
This website will be the online location for community participation in this budget project. While there will also be in-person events that have opportunities to speak with our team, this site will be our public forum and a place to find most current information about the project.
The site has several tabs, each of which can help you participate in the budgeting process:
Feedback: head to this tab to add any feedback that doesn't seem to fit on the map. You can also answer questions from our program team and comment on other community members' ideas.
FAQ: as this process will be new to many of us, we've provided some more detailed information about participatory budgeting, the funding, and your role as community members here. Let us know on our Feedback tab or by emailing Laura if you have any additional questions!
