What's in the Works

MassDevelopment is proposing to rezone Vicksburg Square as a first step towards the residential reuse of these long vacant buildings. The new housing (up to 288 units) will meet the needs of a broad range of households including empty nesters, young couples, seniors, Devens employees and others. 20 or 25 percent of the units will be set aside for low income households, consistent with Devens' long-standing commitment to affordable housing opportunity.

What's There Now

Vicksburg Square is the iconic former headquarters complex for the U.S. Army at Fort Devens. These stately brick buildings have sat empty since 2007, when the last tenants of Revere Hall were relocated due to public safety concerns. Although the buildings have been moth-balled, conditions continue to deteriorate with each passing year.

What's Happening Next

Rezoning property in Devens is a complicated and time-consuming process culminating in a vote at so-called "super town meeting" (simultaneous town meetings held in Ayer, Harvard and Shirley). Before that vote is held (likely in October, 2020), MassDevelopment will lead a public outreach process to get input on the proposed zoning from the public. This process is just getting underway now.
