REQUEST FOR COMMENTS The City of Winston-Salem is seeking comments from the public on the demolition and redevelopment of the Cleveland Avenue Homes Public Housing Complex, located at 1135 East 15th Street, and its effects on historic properties. The project will be funded through the federal HOME, CDBG, and Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Grant programs. Cleveland Avenue Homes has been determined to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and its demolition constitutes an adverse effect to a historic property under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Per Section 106, the City must take action to resolve the adverse effect. The City is in consultation with the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Officer, the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem, and McCormack Baron Salazar to prepare a Memorandum of Agreement that will outline the actions needed to mitigate effects to the historic property.
The proposed mitigation activity is the development of a catalog of historical records that documents the impact of post-New-Deal federal legislation on Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, including but not limited to, the construction of interstate highways, public housing, and urban renewal. Comments must be received by March 17, 2023.

The NCWorks Adult/Dislocated Worker program, and NextGen Youth Program will also be on site. The NextGen program serves youth ages 16-24, youth within that age range are definitely encouraged to attend.

We will be hosting a townhall meeting for all residents and those interested at 7:00 pm Monday, October 11, 2021 to discuss the future plans for the Brown School site and the Choice Neighborhood grant. Meeting to take place at the Career Center North Building at 910 Highland Ct.
