Great question, and I don’t really know the answer right now! But I’m open to all sorts of possibilities.

Sunlight, green space, art….all sounds wonderful. But I think security is critical, and I have no idea how that plays out in a way that provides safety but isn’t harmful or traumatizing to youth and residents. I suspect that security strategies would need to be regularly revisited with residents, letting them determine what is best. Residents in Year 1 may have very different needs than residents 3 years later.

If I were designing the space, I think that opportunities for community and fellowship would be most important. Spaces for communal meals, celebrations, meetings, just hanging out together. They should be where residents would naturally gravitate – lounges on each floor, front “porches,” etc. Even a laundromat – I know the thing is to have washers and dryers in your own apartment, but laundry can be a very social household chore! Also a store that employs youth who live in the building that sells everything from laundry detergent to ice cream. My students always ask me to pay for gym memberships, but they often go unused because of transportation and time barriers. So a nice gym.

I work with youth who are experiencing housing instability and homelessness. Currently, most of our youth are in college, but typically we have students who are in high school, too. (Nothing is ‘typical’ these days.)
