David Pollack's projects
Hi, I think that there should be one or two hotels in the downtown area also, for people who come from out of Haverhill or just visiting during the weekend or so, it would be nice to have one in the downtown area instead of going on the other side of the city. As well, they should build an performing arena, like where different artists, local bands, acts, plays, etc all can perform there along with some sporting events.
Work with the General Services Administration and the Post Office to acquire the Post Office. Relocate the PO to another part of town. Renovate the existing building into a performing arts center and museum.
Relocate the bus terminal to another location. Turn the existing parking area/bus terminal into a park. Re-grade the area to meet the boardwalk to be built along the flood wall. The park could tie in nicely with the performing arts center.
Reduce the size of the paved area of Post Office Square. Provide better access and provisions for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Consider changing Washington Street back to one-way traffic (like it was in the fifties!) Include "traffic calming" techniques.
EV is growing and this might be a great opportunity to jump on this. Tesla provides free supercharging for all of its customers and they also have the mass production model 3 coming out soon (500k production yearly plan) so they are looking for more spots to add their super chargers. Charging the car can take 15minutes so they are looking for spots that their customers can walk around, shop, and eat.
This will force more people to the downtown area and they will see the brighter side of Haverhill once these projects get started or completed.
Promoting biking too with bike lanes might soften up the area as well.
But I would love to see a nice French bakery post up in that area so I can sit on a park bench and enjoy my croissant and coffee while overlooking the river too :).
1) Add a large dock/walkway along the river.
2) Remove a (any) large building between Merrimack st and the water. Turn this land into a park, so people can access the dock and relax in the park.
I would think people would come and walk around, but also shop at the stores, and buy food and drinks.
