Drake Woods, I couldn't agree with you more. Having lived here since 1971, it's always torn my heart that the Wharf hasn't been successful. It's not too big to get congested (I always think of San Diego's Seaport Village and others) and not too small, so being busy while being down to earth should be attainable.

Great info here. I live half a mile from the site and this is what we need--I could even see myself living in the apartments! I also found Harbor Director Mark Sandoval's recent blog post helpful, as it answered some common questions about the development: https://www.channelislandsharbor.org/blog/directors-message-planning-and-development-updates/

All of the retail and restaurants should have a nautical them. Having this them tied to the history of the harbor and surrounding CHI area would also be good. There might also be some way to tie in the themes from the CHI nautical museum and the Seabees museum given their proximity to the location.

I think having some ice cream and similar vendors (carts) on the boardwalk area along with the child-themed park would be something to attract youth...along with their families/parents. If the CIH museum had something similar to their current youth-orientated activities in the space that would also be good. The addition of some automotive-related items for youth engagement to reflect the Mullin Automotive Museum focus might also be another draw.

I think this is exactly what the area needs. A needed makeover with value added to the community.

Jason, there's a maritime museum at 3900 Bluefin Cir, Oxnard, CA 93035. I've walked by it several times (just haven't gone inside yet), but I believe it also features the local areas.

Parking has definitely been a consideration (I've heard it discussed rather extensively), but I'd like the Wharf's developers collaborate with the managers at the Seabridge, the Vintage Marina along Harbor Blvd, and the Peninsula Marina areas. Because of their dispersion, these areas SHOULD be able to accommodate the parking, in addition to leveraging each others' offerings.

I think there should be outdoor seating throughout the area. Could be benches, could be a few picnic tables, could be tables for dining outside. The area will not thrive unless there are opportunities to sit outside.

I'd lean more towards the park and wharf being dog-friendly, with water spouts and "doggie bags" interspersed.

A small water park. Nothing big. Maybe water that shoots out from the ground and from sea animals. I’ve seen it in many places before. Kids love it in the summertime.

Excellent ideas, Rosalyn! One of the things the wharf has so lacked in the past is outdoor restaurants. Ease of access will be key to the wharf's future success, translating to the success of its restaurants, retail, etc... and their respective owners and employees.

I'm in favor of restoring the lighthouse and urchin dock. It could be complemented with weekend art shows or, depending on the overall design of the wharf, the lighthouse and urchin dock could also be a place for a smaller music venue.

A water feature would be a nice continuation of the ocean lifestyle, but I'd like to see some kiosks. An open-air area to accommodate musicians would be a nice addition, too. Obviously, because it's a family area, nothing too "over the top". I'm always reminded of Europe and their plazas.

Definitely have small picnic areas, but I'd lean more towards a ocean-themed playground.

For this setting and from my travels, I'm of the opinion that it should lean more intensively towards restaurants / eateries with a handful of locally-owned retail. And, I'd keep services companies (ie, financial / banking, etc...) to almost nil; however, I'd also open it up to a shop / storefront that rents watercraft, wheeled vehicles, water taxi. Bottomline - Keep it local.
