Although a lower income area, I feel this is not a reason for the neighborhood to be neglected. The roads in this area are crumbling, the parking for the bike oath has been commandeered for construction staging area, and the sidewalks are over in with trash and weeds. A better maintained neighborhood would make the neighborhood feel safer and look nicer to visitors to our city. Low income or not.

To piggyback on to this, having a safe way to cross the river to access the West side (not just connect the bike trails) would be great as Queen City bridge is not the most bike friendly.

Having a connection to the water front cycle path from Elm Street, somewhere in between Granite St and Queen City Ave would be nice. Currently, you can connect via entrance behind Delta Dental Stadium or you have to cross the wide and busy Queen City Ave to connect to the trail at Sundial Ave to the South. Perhaps utilize Hancock St next to the Elliot to make a connection?

At least 2 of the 'fancy' arched streetlights (left and right of Dunkin) are missing the whole 'light' part. Also not sure if these are supposed to be free-swinging? Noticed them bobbing around last winter.

A pedestrian & bicycle elevated path above the water along the west side of the river would be great. It could start at Bass Island Park (on the Piscataquog), head east to the Merrimack and then head north until it reaches Arms Park (or even go as far as the islands). A few connections to various locations would give many people access to many things (Stark Landing, the north side of Granite Street, the old bridge supports near Waumbec St & Arms Park, Foundry St. on the west side, etc).

I wandered over to VanOtis Chocolate one day while waiting on my oil change across the street at Firestone. This strip of shops is really nice! The parking behind between them could use a bit of love though- it's functional but rough.

Want to get really ambitious? What would it take to put the railroad tracks underground, and a pedestrian/bike trail on top? This would transform the entire area I'm sure, and make all other requests re: crossing tracks moot. I also know it would also be insanely expensive, if not impossible. Just putting it out there.

There are little pathways through the overgrowth and across the railroad tracks in this area. It would be nice to have some designated pathways in the the area to funnel foot traffic safely from one area to another. The different levels and steep grade also make it difficult to get from one area to another.

Bass Island Park, and the Dog Park across the street are cool locations. It would be nice if the whole island were a park. The lumber/construction materials that sit here seem really out of place/ uninviting.

This walkway that connects Canal St to S Commercial St feels:
1) unsafe at night
2) like a secret that no one takes ownership of
Please highlight the visibility of this walkway, increase lighting, and keep it clean.

Agreed! (See my suggestion at the rail trail bridge) A connection here that was bike friendly would fit the bill too.

There's a real need for a connection between S Commercial St and Elm St, for all modes of transportation.

Pedestrian bridge over intersection of Granite and S. Commercial Street to ease congestion, especially during events at ballpark.

I'd love to be able to easily get from the Rail Trail to the Market Basket, or to other destinations down Valley St, on my bike. Having to go North to Granite St or South to Queen City Ave seems like a great idea stopped short. Get cyclists from across the river straight onto Elm (or at least across the train tracks), and it would be perfect.
Wish list item: Would love to see a kayak area setup along the river front. Many nice areas of the river in the city, but this would make an ideal drop point.
