The 40B project filed for this location is now going through permitting. Residents should learn more about it and attend the hearings.

Let’s reposition the Recreation Center as the Center for Lifelong Learning! Quality education is a town asset, and our biggest expense, but all residents should benefit, not just people with kids in school. Make a conscious effort to hold educational events of all kinds for young adults and seniors in our schools that are welcoming and celebrate diversity, build intergenerational connections, and leverage the talents of our residents. Create some branding and marketing around it. We need ways to engage citizens in community who don’t have kids in the schools - create broader community for everyone.

Are you talking about the Jenks Center or the parking lot? We need parking, so I’d be reluctant to lose it. I don’t know if there are restrictions on the Jenks, but if not, it would be an amazing location for a 60+ Housing building. Add a couple floors to it, and keep the senior center on the ground floor. Include affordable units in it, too. Create an Intergenerational educational complex, between Jenks, the schools, library, town hall and Griffin Museum. Check out Jacobs Pond building in Norwell, I think it’s a similar model for independent living on a pond.

Heidi’s point is really important — our zoning should be created in the context of an economic development plan that will encourage and support local businesses that are innovative and make sense for our geographic and demographic assets and to foster economic sustainability. Let’s get creative.

The Winchester Public Library is a great asset to the Town of Winchester.
