I garden in a community garden and can say that gardening does not attract pests. Even a small 6x8' bed would be big enough to have herbs that everyone can use, cherry tomato plants, etc. Things like cherry tomato plants can also be grown in garden pots, which can be stored in the winter. You could ask the landscape architect to include several spots for small movable planters. The main thing is to plan for easy access to water. Also, I used to lead tenants in a SRO and their neighbors in planting tulip and daffodil bulbs every fall; everyone was happy when they came up in the spring, knowing they had helped plant them.

Thanks for the changes! Could you also answer "Why not increase the # of case workers now, to at least two?" Unless you are saying that relocation workers are trained case workers, I still think it would be good to increase case workers now, instead of waiting until after construction is over..

In the public meetings, CHA said most of the new units will be for homeless people, which is good. But the main description of this project on Courbanize does not mention homeless people; it is only in the FAQs. In the meeting, CHA stated there would be case workers present M-F and security people every night; it would be good to add this info to the Courbanize site. Under What's Next, it mentions the meeting that just happened; it should instead talk about going to the Planning Board. My question is: Why not increase the # of case workers now, to at least two? This would also help with relocation and any stress tenants might experience. I know tenants in other subsidized buildings that were renovated found the relocation process to be quite stressful (I would too.)

Maybe explore the way the convent used to serve the neighborhood and how similar services are provided now... sort of a then and now comparison. First it would help to know more of the history of the building and its residents.

The planned mural/mosaic art work would be a good way to highlight the building's history. There could also be a historical sign on the outside wall.

Quality housing with full services for additional homeless people; preservation of existing trees and good landscaping; good building design and sustainability; increasing positive interactions with neighborhood residents. [Same answer as my response for the renovations.]

Comprehensive onsite services for residents; interaction with neighbors, such as a block party, concerts, meet and greet with refreshments, gardening, etc. I'd like residents to be able to garden if they are interested, whether growing vegetables in a raised bed, or planting tulips in the fall, etc., possibly together with neighbors.

1. Please use respondents' time well; do not ask for thoughts on things that are already decided. I think before CoUrbanize asks for input, they should show the Info page of the project; the Info should say that there will be no ground floor retail. It should make clear the project is approved and under construction and state the completion date.
2. I think I commented on this project before it was approved. But I have not gotten any of the Updates on the website.

Johsua, for years, the Planning Board has approved every housing proposal that needed zoning changes, with the exception of the recent Alewife Quad proposal which also included a lot of commercial building, where they felt there were many problems with the proposal. They also voted in support of the Affordable Housing Overlay zoning.

J Saif- I don't think it's at all accurate to say that members of the Planning Board and Board of Zoning Appeals oppose increasing the housing supply in Cambridge. Planning Board members have for years approved every housing proposal needing zoning changes, except the recent one in the Alewife Quad, where they had many concerns about the project.

I think we need someone progressive and policy oriented, someone with a vision for how the city needs to change to adapt to the challenges of the next couple decades. Between climate change and the housing crisis, Cambridge cannot and will not look the same a decade from now, and the city manager needs to be someone actively interested in driving that change, not just being responsive.

Progressive, collaborative, inclusive, willing to try out-of-the-box approaches. The next city manager must be willing to be transparent and to be responsive to the City Council.

Like most local police forces, Cambridge's police have a culture of impunity and act with general disdain for residents. The City Manager should be willing to hold these public servants accountable to treating the public with greater respect. The coming years will bring many disagreements over bike lanes, parking, and other transportation issues. The City Manager must focus on the long view and see the need for Cambridge to be an exemplar in reducing emissions and increasing the safety and convenience of active transportation. Cambridge has unrivaled fiscal capacity. We should not be afraid to invest those dollars at a greater scale, even if it means higher taxes and fees for wealthy residents and corporations.

The next City Manager should be open to a process that would enable the City Council to hold the City Manager more accountable and evaluate her/his performance.

Fossil fuel usage reduction (and no new fossil fuel connections for new buildings), climate preparedness, open space preservation and restoration of tree canopy, balancing policing with social justice

Managing development pressure to make sure needs for affordable housing are supported while protecting Cambridge's historic character and environment (trees, open space, flood-prone areas).

I'd like our city manager to understand the needs of small (and new) business owners looking to launch in our city, in particular as large corporations drive much of the development in places like Kendall Square and Harvard. Quite a few spots sit unoccupied along Mass Ave. and a number of cultural touchstones have shut down in the past few years. I'd like Cambridge to facilitate more small and local businesses to take their place.

I think Cambridge's poor handling of liquor licenses for restaurants left a stain on city management. Let's make sure the new city manager uses a sound legal foundation when helping bars and restaurants who want to serve alcohol get off the ground.

I'd like the manager to ask much more of commercial developers who request zoning benefits. I'd like to see universal pre-K implemented rapidly.

I hope the search process will include under-represented people at each stage, including lower-income people, people of color, tenants, and unhoused people.
I hope the search will attract people from diverse backgrounds, and that some of the candidates who are interviewed and are finalists will be people of color and/or women.

Challenges:
-Rising land and housing costs
-Displacement, especially of Black families
-Lack of open space in eastern half of city, how to create open space
-Job mix is heavy on high paid, high-tech jobs; not enough decently-paid jobs that can be done with less education, such as light manufacturing
-How to engage residents of all incomes and backgrounds and come to a shared understanding of ways to move forward
Opportunities:
-Upcoming discussion of charter reform
-Create innovative, leading edge housing affordability policies
-Create innovative, leading edge climate and sustainability policies

-Affordable or social housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income people, including homeownership, building on city lots, and increasing renters rights, with a goal to prevent and reverse the displacement of black and brown and/or lower-income residents in Cambridge.
-Climate crisis, environmental justice, resilience, sustainability, preventing sewage flow into Alewife Brook, not building in the flood plains at Alewife, increase biodiversity and trees.
-Collaboration with the Council, more democracy; transition away from a city manager position.
-Implement the HEART alternative to police response program.
-Ensure that jobs are more in balance with available housing, so new jobs don't worsen demand for housing and increasing housing prices.
-Dedicated to promoting the well-being, engagement, and rights of marginalized communities, including tenants, people of color, and lower-income people who are at risk of displacement, with a goal of maintaining the city’s economic and racial diversity and enhancing equity.
-Implement municipal broadband.
-Devise affordable rental policies to so small businesses, non profits, and artists can stay in Cambridge.

I would like the manager to be a person who has a commitment to democracy, who will be collaborative with the Council and the public, who will be accountable to the Council and the public through reports and evaluations; who will be accessible to the public, including meeting people in the streets.
I think we need new approaches and ideas, so I'd like the manager to be a person who is not in the current city administration, who is from outside Cambridge.
I'd like someone with a history of being a highly effective team manager; someone who is a good listener and good communicator who regularly shares their vision with the public, who is open and responsive towards a wide range of perspectives.
I'd like the manager to be responsive, inclusive, inviting of community involvement and engagement.
