Totally agree that public transportation must be robust.

It is important that the campus is accessible without a car. What plans are in place to ensure the walk from the Washington Ave + Veranda St bus stop is as safe and convenient as possible, or any further plans to increase accessibility. I would hate if this project just becomes a glorified parking lot with little public transit access, creating more congestion in the immediate area.

Walk-ability. With the highway right there, extra attention will be needed to make the area feel walkable, and to allow walking access that connects to other areas of Portland.

Yes! Of course! If we could convert the St Lawrence and Atlantic to a multi use path people could commute to campus by walking/biking as far as Yarmouth. Turning the dilapidated bridge into a pedestrian bridge would also be transformative.

I live on Munjoy Hill and have a boat at the marina next to this project. The huge building facing the highway is out of scale for the city and the neighborhood. Please be good neighbors and think about your impact on the larger area, we don't want to be Boston. Reduce the scale and the design of the building so that it integrates into the natural area. People use the paths in this area to be near nature in a city. Think about creating something that is both people-scaled and integrates into the natural environment. You have a huge opportunity to do something really special and unique. Please go back to the drawing board.

My observations from last night's meeting (I am a neighbor and huge supporter of the project):
1. The property has been sitting vacant .. abatement and development will occur The property is too valuable to just sit. I can't think of a better purpose for this property than to support/educate creative minds for the benefit of our entire state.
2. The opportunities for education/scholarships, research, entrepreneurship will provide an enormous boon to the entire state of Maine. To me, these outweigh our immediately local inconveniences.
3. The Alfond family has been incredibly generous to many (all?) of our educational institutions. I trust Alfond family judgement getting involved here - it must truly believe in the value of the Roux Institute. Ditto with David Roux whose vision comes from his attachment to our state and whose generosity is incalculable.
5. USM development is occuring. UNE is in the Stevens Ave. neighborhood. SMTC is just outside SoPo neighborhoods. I have heard no loud complaints of USM development, nor traffic/noise issues from these institutions. (I do like the speed bumps on Stevens).
I trust your process of holding public sessions, I believe you will share details as you define/refine them, I believe you will listen to our concerns. Good luck!

I wonder if you are considering an on-site day care for faculty, students, staff. What a huge stress-reliever that would be for your community.
