I disagree with using 'bumpouts' to calm traffic. This is using a physical barrier on an already narrow roadway, with the intent on hoping the traffic will slow down. This doesn't seem to really address the fact that at this particular point, the roadway already is compromised due to parking on both sides and a busy intersection. My car was hit by a city school bus at this area last winter. I was well behind the line at Tyler St. at a red light; headed towards First St., as shown in the police report. This school bus attempted to make a left turn off of Pine onto Tyler. I backed up as much as I could with a car behind me, even after being behind the appropriate line at the intersection. The bus couldn't make the turn without hitting the left side of my front bumper. This clearly was an accident caused by the school bus that has now caused me more problems due to the municipality not taking responsibility to pay for the damages. Now, with these 'bumpouts' there will be more problems and accidents, that are unneccesary. To infer that the box truck was going too fast is wrong. An inference is only based on an assumption of what one sees without knowing all of the facts.

Today I watched a box truck swerve into the wrong lane trying to avoid those bump outs. I can’t see how they keep pedestrians safe, they seldom get shoveled. And as I mentioned before, as I cycle down Tyler Street, the bump outs force me into the traffic lane. Does no one care how dangerous this is?

Is there a map available somewhere that shows blighted buildings, owners, etc? Are they out-of-town owners? Are there programs that encourage owners to improve properties?

The Tyler Street impression would improve tremendously just by cleaning up the Hess property! This the worst eyesore in the city!

I would also like to add (also not being a 'native') that passing on the right is something that seems like a common driving technique here. I support the bike lane but it terrifies me to think of cars continuing to do this and the bikers being at extreme risk of injury.

I absolutely hate to be "that guy", but as someone who is not native, the drivers (including police) are insanely aggressive here. Bike lanes are not going to be respected, they will just be more area for cars to try to pass others. I absolutely hate being a pedestrian on this street, because the lane of parked cars blocks the moving vehicles views, and even at marked crosswalks, with lights, drivers are in such a rush, that near-death incidents happen often. There's no way I would ride a bike on this street, especially with it being a bus/truck route.

Is does seem odd that the city allowed it to sit and enter such disrepair. Maybe I’m wrong but I would think a creative developer would have grabbed that piece up in a minute. What is going on there? Very sad to see that.

More trash recepticles/less trash in the roadside. Maybe some planters!

It's true, a traffic signal at the intersection of Dalton Avenue, Tyler Street and Woodlawn Avenue is longer over due.

Yes, I can’t imagine riding a bike, even if in a bike lane, along Tyler Street. Burbank Street is probably a good option. Now, if we could divert the large commercial trucks onto an alternate roadway I might feel safer on a bike on Tyler.

Burbank St might be an attractive bike path through the neighborhood connecting bikers to the Morningside School and Rice Silk Mill. If the path went around back of the Silk Mill and connected to Ray Crow Park, that would be awesome!

The old Hess Station is screaming potential for a food truck court. Clear it out, set up some picnic tables and a bring in food trucks and live music.

Concerning plowing, this presents an additional challenge as people have to find another place for their cars to be parked (instead of Tyler Street) on snow days to allow for plowing. Where do the residents park? I have often wondered this. Should there be smaller parking areas along Tyler where people can park and then walk Tyler Street to frequent the businesses?

I am curious to see the outcome of the streetscape and how it will improve both traffic safety and pedestrian and bicycle safety.

The bump out is confusing for me - I turned right off Pine the other day and was very nervous as a driver on what I was doing.

I have seen this as a problem for the traffic. In the morning I am usually behind a school bus leaving Morningside. If traffic is stopped at the red light headed toward First St the bus has a very hard time turning. One day the traffic had to back up just so the bus could still turn on our green light, yet it could not get past the post without hitting it. I have also seen trucks have the same issue.

I do like the concept of providing additional pedestrian safety, however, what I am also reading in the same sentence is ‘narrow the roadway’. This is a concern to me because there are large vehicles traveling along this roadway, specifically delivering goods, perhaps to the large retail, grocery and big box stores. The particular intersection of Tyler and Pine/Cherry, prohibits larger vehicles (school buses and delivery cabs, perhaps) from entering Tyler from Pine/Cherry. Am I incorrect in my assessment of this? Is it possible to divert the larger vehicles to another parallel roadway?

I have thought about this. I personally don't feel at this time that adding any more 'parklets' would be helpful for Tyler Street. Utilizing the old Hess station makes sense at this point in time, as it would alleviate an eyesore and offer green space for the community. However, the main challenge, I believe, is addressing the traffic situation. Tyler Street is (or, my perception of it) a major auto/truck thoroughfare, and, as such, deters more people from walking and enjoying the existing businesses. I suspect most people who frequent the businesses use their autos to get there and then struggle to find a parking space. However, without some sort of data collection, it would be difficult to verify this. While I appreciate the interest in improving Tyler Street, I really think that the heavy traffic is a major challenge. How do others feel about this?

This is radical, I know. In the vision of a walkable and bike friendly community, the only answer I see feasible is to make Tyler a one-way street. Given the traffic, the noise the traffic generates, traffic accidents , lack of parking, I see no other way than to make it a one-way street to achieve the community that seems to be desired within this area. This would encourage people to walk more, not having to dodge cars and trucks that barrel down the road. Additionally, parklets could be added along Tyler Street to promote a sense of community.
