Support for our businesses & cultural institutions

I would support efforts to revitialize Steinway street if you could limit the number of floors of new commercial developments so that they don’t become vacant high rises. The schematics show buildings as tall as 27 floors which just creates a polluted skyline and decreases air flow and Astoria has the worst rates of asthma in the borough. Additionally, there should be affordable rent for small businesses, access to construction contracts with set asides for minority women and business enterprises as well as locally owned enterprises. I would also like to see solicitation of businesses for childcare, after-school programming, creative and recreational activities for kids O-16 years old. This could include fun zone centers, playhouses, arcades, a versitile space for roller skating/ice skating like Rockefeller Center or Bryant Park. I would like to see outdoor vendor markets and night markets that include local businesses and represent a diversity of people. I want this development to avoid gentrification of the neighborhood, stomping out local businesses, and becoming an “empty midtown” type of neighborhood.
